GSMA Intelligence research company conducted a global telecom market study, having evaluated such parameters like data traffic growth, the number of smartphone users increase, etc.
Thus, according to GSMA, in the end of 2016 there were 4.84 billion unique mobile users worldwide, using 7.5 billion SIM-cards (cards for M2M-data not included). It’s 1,5 "connection" per user. Curiously, less than a quarter (24%) of all mobile phone users are contract customers, while prepaid users make up 76% of the total audience.
The number of smartphone users is gradually increasing: in the end of 2015 these users were making up only 45% of the audience, whereas in the fourth quarter of last year their number grew up to 51%, and to the end of the first quarter of 2017 the number of smartphone owners is projected to reach 52%.
